Some people know how to switch on their percolators or stir in some spoonfuls of instant coffee garbage, but people who know what goes into a good cup of coffee are few and far between. There are so many “quick” and “easy” options out there that many people have missed the point of enjoying coffee and getting the most out of it. It’s not hard to brew a good cup of coffee; it just takes a little bit of care.

One thing about making good coffee is that the maker needs to be willing to invest in quality materials. If you want a good brew then you need good ingredients, starting by good coffee beans. The better and more flavourful the beans, the better the coffee will be. You will also want to use good water, not just any water you find around the house but clean and soft water with no flavour at all.

You will also need to know how to brew each different kind of coffee. The finer the blend, the less time it has to brew. So for a percolated cup you only need regular grinds that are somewhat coarse. When you use other machines and methods, for instance a French press, you begin to use finer grinds. For espresso you will use extremely fine grinds that will only be exposed to the water for a few dozen seconds.

If you want good coffee, then try new methods of brewing it. Always avoid instant coffee, which will never give you any kind of good flavour, unless you are going to use it to add to a dessert or a smoothie. Percolated coffee is extremely common, but sometimes other ways of brewing coffee will give you an even better flavour. If you are using a percolator then experiment with different types of filters for various effects. The filter determines how long the coffee grinds stay with the water, and this affects the taste tremendously. Paper filters are often used, but some people also use metal filters for a slightly better effect. It’s up to you to decide.

The most important part of brewing a good cup of coffee is to always go for quality over quantity. One good cup is worth two bad ones, and if you enjoy the flavour and aroma of good coffee then you should be willing to spend money on it.
